Appliances such as washing machines, dryers and refrigerators sit for years in corners that are often damp enough to rust and corrode their metal casing. Refinishing one of these appliances is similar to refinishing an automobile that has sustained similar damage on the road. Like an automobile, the appliance has a painted metal body with chrome or black metal trim, and you can have it looking like new with some time-tested car-painting techniques. —San Francisco Gate
Gas stoves average a lifespan ranging from 15 to 17 years. Their electric counterparts are generally useable for 13 to 15 years. But, the average lifespan of a dishwasher is much less impressive, with just 8 to 10 year
How to Revive Old Appliances
So, if it’s still feasible, you can follow these steps to revive old appliances:
- Take off doors, trim, and hardware. Unfortunately, you can’t restore appliances in their installation space. Instead, move them temporarily to a well-ventilated, covered area. A garage or workshop are ideal places to revive old appliances. Next, remove the doors, trim, and hardware. Then fill any puncture holes with auto body filler. Pull dents using a dent puller.
- Heavily clean with grease-cutting soap. Now, you need to start with a clean surface. So, use a grease-cutting detergent to really get it clean. TSP works well and be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Sand away any rust first, then apply a rust inhibitor. Sand the surface smooth with 220- to 400-grit wet/dry sandpaper.
- Paint the outside with good appliance paint. Once prepped, you can then spray on appliance paint, in a smooth, consistent manner. Let dry according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and then carefully sand to smooth using 400-grit sandpaper. (You’ll probably need to repeat this process at least once. About three coats of appliance paint is normal.)
- Replace the old hardware to update the appliance. Take the opportunity to replace the hardware to give those old appliances a whole new look. New pulls and knobs are a great way to transform just about anything and appliances are certainly no exception. You can also replace old feet and deep cleaning and clearing glass for even more impact.
